Get notifications of webpages, folders, email, etc.. with Specto!

Saturday, May 24th, 2008
With Specto (linux only) you can now get notifications at anytime on your computer of webpages, email, file and folder changes, system process etc. For example this can be very helpful if you need to watch a page, say for homework that your teacher puts up, yet he does not provide a feed link. Instead of checking the site everyday for anything new, I can just wait till Specto tell’s me there’s something new or changed there. Specto is small, simple, and a must have if you want your computer to work for you, not the other way around.

To install specto for Ubuntu simply go to your terminal and type in:

sudo apt-get install specto

dominos

This python script (created by noflashlight.com ) gives you the power to track your pizza order from its beginning as cheese and dough all the way till it comes to your door. So now you know when how long it sits under the heat lamp between the time it comes out of the oven till when the driver leaves Dominoes. Visit http://random.noflashlight.com/ for the download or follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure you have python installed on your computer.
  2. Open your handy dandy terminal.
  3. Use wget to download the python script:
    wget http://random.noflashlight.com/scripts/dominos.py
  4. Make the code you just downloaded executable:
    chmod +x dominos.py
  5. Call Dominoes and order your pizza.
  6. Execute the script replacing ######### with your phone number:
    ./dominos.py ##########
  7. Re run the script every once in a while to update the status of your pizza.

Removing CNR (Ubuntu 8.04)

cnr

Maybe you are like me and was curious about Linspire’s Click-n-Run (CNR) software that allowed you to “easily” install programs in Linux. So you installed it, like I did, and found it to be such a pain to use and all it did was mirror the Add/Remove… which is included within Ubuntu.

To remove CNR:

sudo apt-get remove cnr-client

If you are interested in installing software that is not included within Add/Remove… try www.getdeb.net. GetDeb allows you to download self installing deb files of many programs.

Ubuntu Cookies

It’s been 6 months since I last updated my computer to a new version of Ubuntu. Now today I get to install Ubuntu 8.04. The download was not made available until after 8ish this morning. So I couldn’t download it over night like I was planning.

You can download Ubuntu 8.04 at: www.ubuntu.com

[11:10 am]
Currently Downloading ISO Image…. 63% (445MB of 699MB)

I think I started around 9am. Can’t remember I was half asleep when I started. I do remember that I couldn’t get the Georgia Tech mirror to work.. so I moved to MIT’s.

[11:24 am]  Still Downloading ISO Image…. 68% (479MB of 699MB)

I’m not sure if it’s the stress on MIT’s mirrored server or my sucky Comcast connection but I can only download at a rate of 70KB/s. Which is really bad. Most disc images I download I can get up to around 500KB/s. And of course I’m using DownloadThemAll. Ahh.. the suspense is killing me!

[12:34 pm]  Still Downloading ISO Image…. 88% (620MB of 699MB)

[1:14 pm]  Download Finished!

Whohoo!

[1:14 pm]  Burning ISO to CD

In Ubuntu to burn an iso file, just right click on the file then click Burn to Disc.

[1:20 pm]  Burning Complete.

[1:24 pm]  Starting the Installation

Booting Computer from Disc:

I’m installing Ubuntu 8.04 onto a 3 year old Compaq Presario SR1603WM. The key stroke to boot this computer from a CD is F8.

Selecting Language:

If you are reading this blog you will probubly want to select the English language option by hitting Enter. If you don’t select anything within 30 seconds the live CD will load.

284 More Computers Embracing Open

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

The Howard County public library, in Maryland, has been running all open source since 2006. They have over 284 computers running an Ubuntu based OS with OpenOffice. I mean how great is that. Just imagine how much of our tax dolars would have been spent to install Microsoft’s Windows and Office suite. Umm… thousands! I’m really excited to see an embrace of community driven Open Source software being used so close to my home. Tear…

Well all of this means that us at SnyderBlogs are taking a field trip this week to the Howard County Library. We hope to give you an update later this week after visiting. In the mean time you can always check out OpenOffice.org and Ubuntu (Hardy is comming out soon!).
