Ubuntu 8.04 Released Today! (Installation Log)

Ubuntu Cookies

It’s been 6 months since I last updated my computer to a new version of Ubuntu. Now today I get to install Ubuntu 8.04. The download was not made available until after 8ish this morning. So I couldn’t download it over night like I was planning.

You can download Ubuntu 8.04 at: www.ubuntu.com

[11:10 am]
Currently Downloading ISO Image…. 63% (445MB of 699MB)

I think I started around 9am. Can’t remember I was half asleep when I started. I do remember that I couldn’t get the Georgia Tech mirror to work.. so I moved to MIT’s.

[11:24 am]  Still Downloading ISO Image…. 68% (479MB of 699MB)

I’m not sure if it’s the stress on MIT’s mirrored server or my sucky Comcast connection but I can only download at a rate of 70KB/s. Which is really bad. Most disc images I download I can get up to around 500KB/s. And of course I’m using DownloadThemAll. Ahh.. the suspense is killing me!

[12:34 pm]  Still Downloading ISO Image…. 88% (620MB of 699MB)

[1:14 pm]  Download Finished!

Whohoo!

[1:14 pm]  Burning ISO to CD

In Ubuntu to burn an iso file, just right click on the file then click Burn to Disc.

[1:20 pm]  Burning Complete.

[1:24 pm]  Starting the Installation

Booting Computer from Disc:

I’m installing Ubuntu 8.04 onto a 3 year old Compaq Presario SR1603WM. The key stroke to boot this computer from a CD is F8.

Selecting Language:

If you are reading this blog you will probubly want to select the English language option by hitting Enter. If you don’t select anything within 30 seconds the live CD will load.

Select Language

Checking Disc For Errors:

After you select your language, you will be presented with the following menu. On that menu select the option: Check CD for defects. This will scan the disc you just burned for any errors on the disc that will make the installation very hard to complete. Trust me, even though you can skip this step, from experience it is a very important step.

Checking the CD for defects:

Checking the Ubuntu Disk

After the disc is checked and it is okay, you will be prompted to reboot the machine. If the disc has errors try re-burning the Ubuntu disc image at a lower speed.

Ubuntu Disc Check Finished

Beginning Install:

Once the PC reboots back into the disc, the following menu will be displayed again. This time instead of selecting Check CD for defects you will now select Install Ubuntu

The install program will then load:

Select your language then click forward:

Select the closest city to you so that your timezone can be set correctly:

Select your keyboard layout:

Select the hard drive you would like to install Ubuntu onto. If you are not dual booting the computer just use the guided entire disc option.

Still Writing…. (pst… check back)
